Carina Brown: A Phenomenal Woman Transforming Lives Through Music
A Life Rooted in Music and Service
Carina Brown’s story is one of vision, and unwavering dedication. Born in Johannesburg and later raised in Humansdorp, she discovered her love for music thanks to a passionate teacher who gave her the chance to grow. From those early experiences, Carina carried with her a belief that music is not simply a skill to be taught but a transformative force that shapes hearts, builds discipline, and opens futures.
Building the West Coast Youth Orchestra
As a founding member of the West Coast Youth Orchestra (WCYO), Carina has spent nearly two decades creating opportunities for young people in the West Coast — many of them from rural and under-resourced communities. What began as a bold vision has grown into a full symphony orchestra and outreach programme that has touched thousands of lives.
Through her leadership, WCYO became an accredited UNISA music exam centre, breaking down barriers for local students to earn formal qualifications. Carina has also nurtured international collaborations and exchanges, allowing students to perform alongside peers from other countries.
Quiet Strength Behind the Scenes
Carina’s role is both hands-on and wide-reaching. She is often the one arranging transport for students, securing funding, or calming a nervous performer before a concert. As the Executive Director and Programme Coordinator of WCYO, she manages daily operations, supports families, and ensures that no child is left behind because of circumstance.
Her work is not driven by recognition but by compassion and consistency. Many WCYO alumni — some now professional musicians — credit her as a steady, encouraging presence throughout their journey.
Perseverance in the Face of Adversity
In 2023, Carina suffered a serious fall that left her with ongoing medical challenges. Yet even in the midst of personal struggle, she has continued to serve the orchestra with quiet determination. Her resilience has deepened the admiration of those around her, as she continues to show up, follow through, and put the children first.
A Belief That Music Builds Futures
Carina often refers to a guiding quote from Shinichi Suzuki:
“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens… They get a beautiful heart.”
This philosophy is evident in her work. For Carina, music education is not just about creating musicians but about shaping confident, disciplined, and hopeful young people.
Celebrating a Phenomenal Woman
Carina Brown’s contribution to youth development and the arts on the West Coast is profound. She is a mentor, organiser, and visionary whose quiet strength has shaped an inclusive and impactful organisation. WCYO’s legacy of music education and youth empowerment is inseparable from her tireless efforts.
HCIF is proud to celebrate Carina Brown as a phenomenal woman — a leader whose compassion, perseverance, and dedication continue to transform lives note by note.
