Environmental Initiatives

Our Environmental Programme supports initiatives that enable communities to develop resources and infrastructure, as well as education programmes that raise awareness regarding the importance of natural resources for building sustainability at a community level. We do this by investing in initiatives that improve access to clean water and food security, and by supporting environmental education in schools.

Environmental Initiatives

HCI Foundation promotes sustainability through Environmental Education, Access to Clean Water, and Sustainable Food Security. These initiatives empower communities with environmental knowledge, improve water access, and support self-reliant food production, fostering long-term resilience.

Environmental Education

Engaging young learners early on in environmental literacy has a positive lifelong implication on their relationship with nature. Being environmentally literate helps one understand the impact of his/her actions on the environment. We cannot talk about a thriving South Africa for everyone if we do not educate the future generation about the environment.

Access to Clean Water

Access to sufficient water is one of the necessities of life and a constitutional right. However, many rural communities compete with livestock to access water from open sources, which run dry in droughts. Furthermore, women have to walk far and on difficult terrain to fetch water, and diseases spread from contaminated water. Communities are also unable to grow their own food. These are hard conditions for thriving individuals or communities.

SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY INITIATIVE

HCI Foundation launched its Sustainable Food Security Initiative in 2021 in the wake of our food parcel campaign with eMedia during Covid-19 when food insecurity, particularly in rural areas, was becoming desperate. Following a workshop in November 2020, partner organisations with farming experience joined us to develop a small-scale rural agricultural initiative that would empower communities to become increasingly food secure and self-reliant. This was a new initiative for the HCI Foundation, and the interactive nature of the relationship amongst all our partners has led to valuable learning over the years.
