Celebrating a Phenomenal Woman: Mareldia Tape

Early Roots of Strength and Service

Born in District Six and raised in Bridgetown, Athlone, Mareldia Tape’s childhood was shaped by resilience, community, and a love for learning. As the eldest of eight siblings, she grew up with a deep sense of responsibility. After losing her mother at a young age, she stepped in to help raise her siblings while supporting her father, a respected religious leader and descendant of the revered Tuan Guru. These formative experiences instilled in her values of faith, service, integrity, and compassion that would guide her lifelong journey.

Inspired by a Role Model

Her father, known for his discipline and generosity, was Mareldia’s greatest role model. He embodied the spirit of leadership and service, teaching his children to live with honesty, responsibility, and purpose. His legacy, rooted in Tuan Guru’s historic example of resilience and faith, continues to inspire Mareldia’s vision and work.

A Calling in Early Childhood Development

Mareldia’s passion for people and her conviction that the early years are critical for lifelong development led her to the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector. What began as a profession quickly became a calling. She believed — and proved — that quality early learning could transform lives, especially in underserved communities.

Transformative Leadership at Grassroots Educare Trust

Appointed as Director and CEO of Grassroots Educare Trust in 2004, Mareldia inherited an organisation struggling for stability. With strategic vision, courage, and compassion, she secured sustainable partnerships, stabilised funding, and rebuilt the organisation from the ground up.

Over the next 20 years, she turned Grassroots into one of South Africa’s most respected ECD organisations. Among her many achievements:

  • Sustaining flagship legacy programmes such as the HCI Foundation Adventures Bus, which has provided enriching excursions for over 14,000 children annually.
  • Expanding access to quality educational materials through the Grassroots Shop, supporting thousands of preschools.
  • Developing and accrediting training programmes for rural and underserved ECD practitioners.
  • Innovating new models, such as the Grassroots Playgroup Programme and Site Learning Programme, now implemented at thousands of centres.
  • Championing sector-wide impact as a mentor, policy advocate, and leader in bodies like the National ECD Alliance and SACECD.

Her leadership culminated in 2022 when the South African Parliament marked Grassroots’ 50th anniversary with a special motion of recognition — a national honour that underscored the organisation’s lasting impact.

Beyond the Office: A Life of Care and Legacy

Mareldia’s life achievements extend far beyond her professional career. She helped raise her siblings and extended family after her mother’s passing, raised five children of her own, and mentored thousands of teachers, parents, and young people. She has always led with empathy and integrity, creating opportunities for others to grow and thrive.

Her motto — “Build from the beginning, uplift for a lifetime” — perfectly encapsulates her life’s work.

A Lasting Impact

Under Mareldia’s stewardship, Grassroots has not only survived but flourished, leaving a legacy of transformed communities and empowered practitioners. She has created employment, developed training opportunities, and secured stability for countless individuals who now carry forward her vision of service.

As she approaches retirement, her journey stands as a testament to resilience, leadership, and the transformative power of education. Mareldia Tape is more than a leader — she is a phenomenal woman whose life of service has uplifted generations.
