Celebrating Phenomenal Men: Abraham Ngobeni

Innovation Africa South Africa (iASA) is proud to nominate Abraham Ngobeni, a dedicated and transformative leader who has spent the last six years improving the lives of rural communities across South Africa. Abraham’s work in providing access to clean water is not just a job but a lifelong mission inspired by his own experiences and driven by an unyielding commitment to making a difference.

A Champion for Clean Water

Abraham’s journey with iASA has been marked by his unique ability to unite diverse stakeholders in pursuit of a common goal. His leadership and collaborative approach have been instrumental in the successful implementation of numerous water projects, bringing much-needed resources to underserved areas. In his various roles, including COO, Country Manager, and now Partnerships Manager, Abraham has been a cornerstone of iASA’s growth and impact. His efforts in fundraising and development are vital to extending the organisation’s reach and effectiveness.

Notable Achievements

Throughout his tenure, Abraham has made significant contributions to the well-being of many communities. His work in engaging stakeholders from the community to the district level has ensured the construction and sustainability of iASA’s water projects. His insights and support have been invaluable to both the iASA team and the organisation’s leadership. Notably, during his time as Country Manager, he oversaw the construction of several new water projects across three regions in South Africa, directly improving the lives of countless individuals.

Leadership and Mentorship

Currently serving as Partnerships Manager and COO, Abraham is celebrated not only for his skills and knowledge but also for his dedication to the organisation’s cause. He has played a pivotal role in the development of many team members and managers as iASA expanded from a small team to a larger, more effective organisation. His ability to inspire and mentor others is a testament to his phenomenal character and commitment.

A Personal Journey of Resilience and Aspiration

Abraham’s personal story is one of resilience and aspiration. Growing up as the third child of a single mother in the impoverished village of Edinburg, Mpumalanga, he faced severe poverty and personal loss from an early age. Despite these challenges, his dedication to education earned him top grades and recognition as the best learner in his circuit. Inspired by his hardships, he aspired to be a catalyst for change, helping those in similar situations.

Inspired by a Role Model

Bishop Rodrick Mnisi, a man who selflessly raised many young boys from vulnerable families, including Abraham, is his role model. Bishop Mnisi’s dedication to providing education, housing, and moral guidance inspired Abraham to emulate his deeds by assisting other young boys in need.

Academic and Professional Excellence

Despite financial obstacles, Abraham pursued higher education with determination, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from the University of Venda. His academic excellence was recognised with a bursary from the Department of Social Development, and he graduated as the best student in his department. His choice of profession was driven by a desire to uplift others, particularly young people and vulnerable women, reflecting his personal experiences and values.

Impact and Legacy

Since joining Innovation Africa in 2018, Abraham’s impact has been profound. Under his leadership, the organisation has completed over 170 water projects, providing clean drinking water to more than half a million people. The team has grown from a single employee to over 20 members, each contributing to the mission of bringing clean water to rural areas.

Giving Back and Role Modeling

For Abraham, giving back is fundamental. He lives by the philosophy, “Umuntu ngu muntu, nga bantu,” which means, “I am what I am today because others gave.” His journey is a testament to the importance of supporting and uplifting others, ensuring that his legacy of compassion and action continues to inspire.

Defining Manhood

To Abraham, being a man means being a role model for family, community, and country. He believes men should be visionaries, great listeners, sensible, and a channel through which many are nurtured. His life and work exemplify these ideals, making him a phenomenal man worthy of celebration.
