Nkosinathi Gcele – A Phenomenal Man
In a world where true heroes often go unnoticed, it’s essential to shine a spotlight on those who are making a profound difference in their communities. Today, we have the privilege of introducing Nkosinathi Gcele, nominated by The Bookery as a Phenomenal Man.
Childhood Memories and Aspirations
Nkosinathi grew up in the community of Khayelitsha, Cape Town. His childhood was shaped by humble beginnings and a strong sense of community. He attended Ikhwezi Lesizwe Primary School and later Luhlaza High School. Despite facing challenges, Nkosinathi always aspired to make a difference in his community.
Role Model and Inspiration
Growing up, Nkosinathi found inspiration in the legendary cricketer Makhaya Ntini. From humble beginnings in the Eastern Cape, Ntini rose to represent his country at the highest level, breaking barriers in a previously white-dominated sport. Nkosinathi admired Ntini’s determination and resilience, traits he would later embody in his own life.
Professional Journey
Without tertiary education, Nkosinathi found his calling in working with children in previously disadvantaged areas. His profession, he says, found him. Since self-introspection in 2014, he knew he wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Biggest Achievements and Contributions
Nkosinathi’s most notable achievements are found in his mentorship skills, passion, and people skills. When he and his colleague started at The Bookery, they realised that the school libraries in townships faced the issue of not having full support from teaching staff. Over the past two years, Nkosinathi has built relationships between librarians and teaching staff, helping them understand the importance of supporting learners’ literacy skills. This change has meant that everyone at the schools is now involved in encouraging learners to see themselves at the centre of all teaching and learning efforts for their benefit and future. Nkosinathi has introduced a sense of community into the schools, changing attitudes toward libraries, with many now seeking ways to support the service of school libraries to learners.
Improving Lives Through Employment and Overcoming Challenges
Through his work, Nkosinathi has not only improved his own life but also the lives of those around him. By providing mentorship and guidance to young learners, he has helped them realize their potential and overcome challenges.
Importance of Giving Back
For Nkosinathi, giving back is essential because government alone cannot eradicate societal challenges. It is through the collective effort of individuals and organisations that communities can thrive.
Firm in Identity, Giving Safe Space
In agreement with Ms Rotshidzwa Marole, we acknowledge that Nkosinathi is firm in his identity while constantly seeking freedom from societal expectations. Family and community ties are crucial to him because he believes that belonging is what gives us strength. Nkosinathi’s kindness and his ability to provide a safe space for others set him apart. At his core, he dreams of a better life for his family, but he also believes that the success of his loved ones is not exclusive to the development of his community.
In conclusion, Nkosinathi embodies the qualities of a Phenomenal Man. Through his dedication, compassion, and commitment to making a difference, he is truly an inspiration to us all.
