Phenomenal Woman: Nokuthula Ligwa, Holistic Educator and Mentor

Early Life and Inspirations

Growing up in Exhorha, Eastern Cape, before moving to Khayelitsha, Western Cape, Nokuthula Ligwa’s early years shaped her resilience and dedication. Her greatest role model was her aunt, who courageously left an abusive marriage and demonstrated independence, hard work, and self-reliance. Inspired by these values, Nokuthula pursued a career in education, driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in underprivileged communities.

Choosing a Life of Service Through Education

Nokuthula’s journey into teaching was fueled by the need for passionate, dedicated educators in her village. Though initially unable to teach at her hometown school due to limited vacancies, she persevered, returning to university to complete her Honours Degree in 2017. This achievement honed her skills and strengthened her ability to meet learners at their individual levels.

A True All-Rounder in Holistic Education

As Senior English Teacher at Centre of Science and Technology (COSAT)  and a member of the School Management Team, Nokuthula embodies holistic teaching. She personally inducts every new Grade 7 learner into the programme, organises bus routes for learners, coordinates meal preparation and serving ensure that learners are well fed, and teaches all the Grade 7 English classes using engaging contemporary texts. Her motherly instincts and personal connection with each learner foster trust, emotional safety, and receptiveness, ensuring that every student is supported academically and emotionally.

Well-being and Academic Excellence

Her commitment extends beyond the classroom. She addresses psycho-social barriers by engaging with parents and, when necessary, collaborating with Department of Education social workers. This hands-on approach contributes to strong academic outcomes, reflected in the consistently high Grade 9 English Systemic Results, demonstrating the long-term impact of her teaching and mentorship.

Philosophy and Impact

Nokuthula lives by the motto: “You can tell a man’s character by the way he responds to someone from whom he has nothing to gain.”

Teaching is her passion, and she approaches it with selflessness, encouraging learners to persevere. Witnessing their growth, achievement, and success is a daily reward, reinforcing her commitment to nurturing not only minds but hearts.

Through dedication, resilience, and compassion, Nokuthula Ligwa exemplifies the essence of a phenomenal woman—transforming lives one learner at a time.
