Responding to Immediate Food Insecurity

HCI Foundation launched its Sustainable Food Security Initiative in 2021 in the wake of our food parcel campaign with eMedia during Covid-19 when food insecurity, particularly in rural areas, was becoming desperate. Following a workshop in November 2020, partner organisations with farming experience joined us to develop a small-scale rural agricultural initiative that would empower communities to become increasingly food secure and self-reliant. This was a new initiative for the HCI Foundation, and the interactive nature of the relationship among all our partners has led to valuable learning over the years.

Building a Sustainable Future

While this short-term intervention filled an immediate gap, it highlighted the need for a more sustainable solution. The high levels of hunger in our society confirmed the urgency of supporting communities in growing food on a small to medium scale. As a result, the HCI Foundation has partnered with key organisations in the food security field to deepen our understanding of the issues and to implement long-term strategies.

HCI Foundation Sustainable Food Security Model

The HCI Foundation's Sustainable Food Security Model addresses hunger through a multi-pronged approach: it combines advocacy and partnerships to influence policy and collaboration, equips individuals with skills through training and mentorship, facilitates access to resources like land and markets, and fosters communication and knowledge sharing. Finally, the model is monitored to ensure its effectiveness in achieving long-term food security.

Key Components of Our Sustainable Food Security Programme

These are the components implemented by our partner organisations with communities to ensure the success of the programme. Our Sustainable Food Security Programme is a pivotal initiative, that works with experienced partner organisations in food security and agricultural experience. Through this programme, we have seen communities achieve food security, generate income, utilise their land productively, and help farmers become self-reliant and work together to improve their lives. This initiative is guided by the philosophy of “get up and do it
yourself.” Our partner organisation has been instrumental in mentoring, supporting, and training farmers to unlock markets and remain engaged in farming.
