Since 2021, HCI Foundation’s partnership with Innovation Africa has focused on improving access to clean water in Hluhluwe. A research study commissioned by the University of KwaZulu-Natal on the immediate positive impact of clean water provision in Cwakeme, the first village to receive a solar-powered borehole and technology to assist in tracking the quantity and quality of the water, provided a strong motivation for the establishment of more water projects in Hluhluwe and beyond.
HCI Foundation had provided potable water to eight villages in Hluhluwe by 25 June 2024, impacting 30,200 lives of people who previously lacked access to drinkable water. The average distance between households and the nearest tap was approximately 100 meters, compared to the 1 km distance that women and children had to travel to collect water from open sources.
