During a recent visit to Ubunye, we observed the challenges faced by rural-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres. Many struggle to keep their doors open due to issues such as a lack of water, unpaid fees from caregivers, and insufficient government subsidies.
Fortunately, the support provided by Ubunye Foundation ensures that these essential learning and safe spaces can continue operating. Both of the ECD centres we visited utilise Wordworks‘ early literacy and language programmes.
Despite the obstacles, the dedication of the ECD centre operators is commendable. However, access to quality ECD remains a significant challenge, as the sector is underfunded and lacks support.
How We Achieved This Project
Food security is also a concern, but teachers are doing their best to ensure children receive meals. The Ubunye Foundation’s Ukhanyiso Fund provides much-needed support to their network of ECD sites, including infrastructure, learning resources, and teacher professional development. Furthermore, the introduction of tower gardens seems to make a difference in ensuring that centres have access to fresh vegetables.
In the Eastern Cape, water scarcity is a widespread issue, depriving citizens of their constitutional right to access water. Nevertheless, our partner organisations are working tirelessly to support their communities.
We recognise the importance of finding creative and effective ways to share the stories of our partner organisations. As we concluded our visit, we felt fulfilled but also acknowledged the need to do more to address these challenges.
